Working in the office for me was like going to detention for the whole week. I dreaded getting out of bed early, going through the rush hour traffic, and everything else. The fact is, I never really liked my job and the company I worked for. Well, that was before April 2nd of last year.

The World Autism Day really made a big change on how I look at the company I’m now working for. I remember being sent an email days before the activity, saying that we are “requested” to attend the recognition ceremonies that will be happening at the office lobby. I thought then that attending the event was a total waste of time. I never liked who I’m working for. Why in the world should I go? It turned out that the event totally changed my outlook on the company.

In a nutshell, the event was about giving recognition to outstanding employees. The company gave out promotional awards and recognition products for those select individuals. Most of the awarded persons got books promotional awards and recognition products. Those prizes were nothing out of the ordinary.

The last award though really put me in awe. The company president called out someone from the finance department and gave him another set of corporate promotional awards and recognition products. I found out that that person was suffering autism. And despite that ailment, he managed to be one of the outstanding employees of the company.

I ended the day with a light heart and an open mind. Since then, I went to the office lighthearted and always very excited, knowing that the company recognizes people’s talents despite their abilities (or disabilities).
